Robert Cogan Center For New Music

Project Brief
Boston, MA - Performance Theater
Professor Ann Pitt - Fall 2023
Programs Used
Rhino3D, Enscape, Photoshop, Illustrator
Project Description
Located at a active intersection of Mass Ave and the Orange Line, this theater balances enclosure and openness, inspired by musical contrasts. Heavy, solid bars house the visiting program, creating a retreat from the city's energy, while a winding ramp extends the threshold, gradually lifting visitors toward the frosted-glass-clad theater. This journey heightens anticipation, limiting exterior views until reaching the spectator’s lounge, where a panoramic terrace reveals the performance, audience, and city beyond.

Concept Development
The theatre's site is highly active, drawing heavy pedestrian traffic from Mass Ave and the Orange Line station. Inspired by my musical translation piece, where high notes cut through the hum of low notes, I applied this concept architecturally.

This building assigns luxury to height, stating that this vertical distance creates a security that allows guests to fully emerge themselves in the theatre experience, while also being able to indulge in the site's energy
